In a quiet town, Fujino is a confident elementary school student whose clever four-panel manga strips earn her idolization from her peers. Her artistic ego is shaken when the school paper begins publishing the astonishingly detailed artwork of Kyomoto, a reclusive classmate who refuses to leave her room. What begins as bitter jealousy transforms into a life-changing friendship when the two young creators join forces, forging an intense creative bond that carries them through the triumphs, heartbreaks, and haunting tragedies of growing into adulthood.

Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda (Shoplifters, Monster) and adapted from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s (Chainsaw Man) one-shot manga of the same name, this acclaimed live-action drama premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. Shot on tactile 35mm film, Kore-eda’s sensitive adaptation pairs nuanced performances with a deeply moving exploration of artistic creation, grief, and the quiet human connections that forever shape our lives.
